Mikrotik 101: router naming, bridging, DHCP server & client
Create WordPress blog (much longer than one hour). Have never run a WP and basically did it as written in learnlinux.tv’s blog.

Tired so all Mtk today.
Mikrotik 101: limiting service access, beginning firewalling
Writing my own config runbook from Mtk manuals.

Another Mtk day. Not the most romantic, but getting RouterOS figured out is a big deal.
Mikrotik 101: firewalling, services, port setup & forwards, just started Wifi and discovered problems in the manual
I do like writing the runbook in an order that makes sense. “Thanks, but I’d like to have all the security stuff up before getting the internet connection going, tysm”

More Mtk, all hour.
All wireless. Tricky as the book is not as current as the RouterOS i’ve got. Needs work, I got my phone to start connecting but no complete connection.
Had fun playing with the scanner and network finders though. I’m definitely in a “2 gHz” kind of neighborhood.

More woes with Mtk wireless. Another hour+++….

I’ve got to park it but i’m almost 100% sure it’s because the instructions forgot to have me associate the DHCP server with the wireless profiles.

Experiments with dumping configs in Mtk.
A couple hours dealing with loading a laptop, fixing a desktop, dealing with a video capture gizmo and learning hard truths about HDMI cables.

Three hosts, turnin’ & burnin’. Got everybody updated, rebooted and happy.

Trying to avoid the 100 Days from being repayment of tech dept, but I had a bad experience and just needed to get the old hosts back up today.
Excuse: old VM work == VM work

Checking out storage in the R730. Proxmox storage can be confusing. Somewhere in there I installed a 500GB SSD, unable to work out what’s on there.

Download & install TrueNAS Core.

I don’t know what’s on this thing, the partitions are grub and boot to ZFS but an NVME caddy won’t boot it, the Framework won’t boot it, a pci card won’t boot it, and the server won’t boot it. Ubuntu on desktop and laptop wouldn’t mount the filesystem and zpool list never showed any sets.

Whatever. Will add some spinning rust tomorrow.

… And add I did.

I got the mystery SSD connected to and booting another via another VM, both server SSDs now sorted.
Reconnected eight hard drives, which was two pools. First was some 8TB that goes to Proxmox for VM storage. Second was a 17TB pool that via disk passthrough is managed by a fresh install of TrueNAS Core and is in scrub right now.

All the old pieces are coming together. There’s some big chunks of data to be negotiated, including multi-TB’s of DVR footage kept for legal reasons.
This all needs to be done again for another server with almost identical hardware, but a different mess of datasets.
I’m missing the networking stuff, but having this storage available will be a huge help and chance to learn more.
Before you can make anything, you need a setup.
